plain/vanilla visual design test page

If I ever decide to go for a pretty plain/vanilla visual design on one of my sites, it might end up somewhat like this. Keeping the layout but blending it all together.

Far from being a redesign, this is a test page to see how an almost flat visual design turns out. I rather create a few such test pages than turning the whole site plain, just in case I don't like the outcome.

As the number in the headline indicates: this is number four in a small series of test pages. The idea is to find out what I like, and what I don't like, as variations over a basic design are introduced by overriding the site-wide stylesheets.

no nonsense design

All non-essential visual divisions and generated content decorations are gone, leaving only the (reworked) visual header in place. Thus, the design theme is preserved.

Making something stand out in content areas, is easy enough on an almost white background.

Pictures may in my opinion stand out too much in some cases, as can be expected in such a plain design.

In the regular stylesheets there are rules for leaving out shadows on images and other elements, that might work better here.

working, but…

No question about it, this plain design is working with this layout. However, I'm not sure if it will be to my liking for very long. I think this test page is a step in the right direction from what I have, but it isn't a solution.

What this and the other test pages have led to on the site as a whole, is a slight ease of already quite light shadows and borders. More can be done along that route, but not this much.

So, although I think it makes sense to simplify web designs, I see no reason to go this far. Guess that has been my impression all along.
